Seibert said "Rajoy contributed decisively during his time in government to Spain being able to work its way out of the serious economic and financial crisis of its own".

Mr Rajoy is the first prime minister in modern Spanish history to be defeated in a no-confidence motion.

Sanchez faces a tough time catering to demands from small parties whose votes he captured in the no-confidence motion, among them Catalan separatists. "With what moral authority do you speak?" he told Sanchez. The incoming leader vowed to address Spaniards' "social urgencies" after years of austerity.

As such, even if he has pledged to govern long enough to restore "institutional stability" before calling early elections, Sanchez's new government will likely be highly unstable.

The support of leftist and nationalist parties for ousting Rajoy won't necessarily lead to parliamentary backing for Sanchez's government and could produce a political stalemate. Rivera said his party would be "very attentive to the concessions" that are made.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has been deposed in a vote of no-confidence.

Sanchez won the no-confidence vote with 180 votes, a slim majority in the 350-seat lower house.

There have been three other such votes since Spain returned to democracy following the death of long-time dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, including one against Rajoy a year ago.

The socialists' unlikely leap into office, unexpected just a few days ago for a party that lags the centre-right Ciudadanos and Rajoy's conservative People's Party (PP) in opinion polls, was precipitated by last week's sentencing of dozens of people linked to the PP to decades in jail in a corruption trial.

He already conceded defeat and congratulated Sanchez, 46, as the next prime minister. Spain's King Felipe VI still has to swear him in.

Earlier on Thursday, Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez demanded Rajoy step down, arguing he had lost credibility after the court ruling, though the PP's number two Maria Dolores de Cospedal later ruled out his resignation before the vote.

"The PP has had corrupt people, I acknowledge it but the PP is not a corrupt party", he said, before accusing Sanchez of "opportunism at the service of personal ambition".
