The remains show signs of a bone infection in one leg that would have likely made walking hard and impeded his escape from the disaster.

Archaeologists in Pompeii have made an impressive - if sad and kind of terrifying - new discovery in the ancient Roman city: the skeleton of a man who was crushed by a giant boulder as he was fleeing the eruption.

From initial tests, archaeologists believe the man, who survived the early stages of the eruption, went looking for shelter along an alley that was later filled high with lava. The dense cloud of gas and stone, called a pyroclastic flow, knocked him backward, the archaeologists say.

Even centuries later, one of the world's most famous catastrophes continues to yield incredible discoveries that also somehow tap into our love of the macabre.

The skeleton was discovered at a recently uncovered area of the Pompeii archaeological site near Naples, Italy.

"That, along with the fact that traces of a harness in valuable iron and bronze were found by its head, suggests that the animal was a specially bred parade horse, probably of considerable value".

They've published photographs of a skeleton of a man with a great big rock where his head should be.

The 35-year-old victim was seemingly beheaded by a hurtling stone that also crushed his thorax, experts claim. Excavations later revealed an extraordinarily detailed image of what life was like at that time.

Director General of the archaeological park, Massimo Osanna, described the discovery as a "dramatic and exceptional find".

The man's remains were found with his upper body completely crushed by a massive rock.

This process involves injecting liquid plaster into the cavities left behind when bodies encased in volcanic ash from the eruption decomposed.
