All Ohio spellers knocked out of this year's Scripps National Spelling Bee

Padhy, who was speller No. 290 in this year's national contest, on Thursday correctly spelled Guayaquil, which is a port city in Ecuador along the Guayas River.

Karthik spelled the word "koinonia" correctly to become the champion late Thursday. The tension and relief on the faces of the other competitors, including Nicholas Lee, 14.

In the final round, 12-year-old runner-up Naysa Modi made a mistake that is all too common for us all: she left the second "s" out of "Bewusstseinslage".

Naysa was making her fourth appearance at nationals and had a loud cheering section.

The third through sixth places went to Abhijay Kodali, Jashun Paluru, Navneeth Murali and Sravanth Malla.

Of note, however: All five spellers who scored the highest on the test were among the 16 finalists. It marked the first time the child of a previous champion competed in the national finals.

Some of these students' parents pay more than $200 an hour to have their prodigies coached by an expert, and the ages of competitors range from 8-years-old to 15.

It was her first trip to the competition, and she said she was taking it "one word at a time", focusing on each one she was assigned to spell. So this year, Scripps Howard created an "invitational" category that added 238 additional spellers to the national competition, bringing the total to a record-setting 516. But then the three-time Missoula County spelling bee champion will once again hit the books.
