  • Nurses' leaves cancelled in Meerut hospitals due to Nipah virus scare

Presiding over a meeting, chief secretary DB Gupta said that Nipah virus has marked its impact in the northern districts of Kerala including Mallapuram and Kozhikode and hence people should avoid travelling in these places.

Dr Reddy said that the results of the test will be known by Sunday.

"The Nipah virus disease is not a major outbreak and is only a local occurrence", the government said in a statement, adding that a team of experts continued to monitor the situation.

In a major relief to the District Administration, a youth, who was suspected to be infected by the deadly Nipah Virus (NiV) and was being treated at the isolated ward of the K.R. Hospital in city has been certified not Nipah-infected. Nitin Grover, a travel agent, said, "I had received booking requests for Kerala, but I refused to do the same because the news on the virus is spread worldwide".

With samples of insectivores bats testing negative for the virus, samples of fruit-eating bats are being collected from nearby Perambra, the epicenter of the Nipah virus, to be send for tests at the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal.

Two more Nipah-infected people are undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, state health officials said. At present, there is no vaccine or drug to treat NiV infection in humans or animals.

Golden State Warriors Rout Houston Rockets for Force Game 7
For the Rockets, it'll take a special team effort to give them the edge and get back to the Finals for the first time since 1996. With about 50 seconds to go during the last quarter of Game 5, Paul was attempting a floater when he fell to the floor.

But panic has already set in, with tests having been ordered after several bats were found dead at a secondary school in the state of Himachal Pradesh.

"Though there is a minimal possibility of Nipah virus in Sikkim, but the people need to take precaution", Sikkim health department said in an advisory.

V. Moosa, who died Thursday in a hospital in the southwest state of Kerala, had two sons and a sister-in-law succumb to the same deadly infection spread by fruit bats last week. On that occasion, pigs were the virus hosts but they are believed to have caught it from bats. What is Nipah virus? The virus has made its presence felt in India in 2001 and 2007, both of the times in West Bengal where it killed close to 60 people before proper medical treatment could be meted out in affected areas.

The infection - described by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a "public health risk" with the potential to develop into an epidemic - first came to the notice of two doctors attached to a private hospital in Kozhikode.

The other mode of transmission is human to human, through body secretions and respiratory secretions.
