Pagourtzis, who business records show owns North American Marine Inc., a ship fix and industrial cleaning company in Houston, north of Santa Fe, told the Journal he struggled to get where he is today.

People embrace at a makeshift memorial left in memory of the victims killed in a shooting at Santa Fe High School, in Santa Fe, Texas, U.S., May 22, 2018.

The Astros held a moment of silence before Friday's game and flew the Texas flags at half-staff in honor of the victims and their families.

Guns are so hard-wired into Texas culture that last week's deadly rampage at Santa Fe High School is considered unlikely to result in any significant restrictions on access to weapons in the Lone Star State. State Rep. Chris Turner of Grand Prairie, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, said Friday that the state should also pass universal background checks and require the reporting of stolen guns.

The most effective breach in the bloviation came from the Houston police chief, Art Acevedo, who wrote a Facebook post that went viral, taking on "the elected officials that ran to the cameras today, acted in a solemn manner, called for prayers, and will once again do absolutely nothing".

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott met Wednesday with representatives of a gun-control group and the Texas State Rifle Association for more discussions about school safety after the shooting that killed 10 people near Houston.

The governor has said he wants to keep guns away from people "who would try to murder our children".

Dimitrios Pagourtzis is being held in the Galveston County jail on capital murder charges. Local police allowed students and staff to come back to campus for the first time to retrieve belongings such as backpacks and cars. Two dozen groups were invited to attend the session, which was expected to include conversations on monitoring students' mental health. And, as Hodges said, the level of inaction after that shooting in particular spoke volumes about who and what American adults are willing to sacrifice for their guns. In what's now a viral video clip, a reporter asks a student if she was in disbelief that such a shooting could take place at her school. The only thing that made Santa Fe different was the hypocrisy of major Texas politicians - the ones who have never wavered in their push for more guns on college campuses, showy open-carry laws and laws that have made it easier for the mentally ill to buy guns. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives traced the weapons to determine their purchase history.

Texas courts are supposed to tell law enforcement if a person taken in for a mental health evaluation has been ordered into a mental hospital. The teen didn't own firearms of his own, he said.

None of those scenarios would have snagged the suspect in Santa Fe.

Gun rights proponents say it prohibits regulations on gun ownership and that enforcement of existing laws should be sufficient to stop violent incidents like the one in Santa Fe.

"If you lose your right, especially one provided by the Constitution, is there some due process? There has got to be due process".
