Trump says United States doesn't have Libyan model approach to NK

Pyongyang said it viewed the joint military exercises held by the US and South Korea as a provocation and that it would not give in to one-sided demands to give up its nuclear weapons.

One interpretation Panda offered was that the North Koreans "effectively thought the US wasn't being serious, was running sort of an arrogant victory lap before the talks had taken place, and was still setting up complete denuclearization as the benchmark".

The US President said "things changed a little bit" after they (North Korean leaders) had the second meeting with President Xi, which, Trump said was a little bit of a "surprise meeting".

Trump's remarks came the day after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged the U.S. to remain calm over North Korea's about-face. North Korea releases three Americans who had been imprisoned, and they return with Pompeo to the U.S. -South Korean military exercises, according to report in Seoul.

Sunday, NSC adviser John Bolton spoke of a "Libyan model" for the North's disarmament, referring to Moammar Gadhafi's surrender of all his weapons of mass destruction in 2004. "I think there must have been something else that got the North Koreans upset".

Pentagon spokesman Col. Rob Manning said, "The defensive nature of these combined exercises has been clear for many decades and has not changed".

"The Libya model was a much different model".

The current uncertainty comes at a time when Trump's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal has drawn criticism internationally and moving the United States embassy in Israel to Jerusalem has fuelled deadly violence on the Israel-Gaza border.

After the months of photo-ops and diplomatic backslapping, a North Korean official was quoted as saying the summit may not go ahead. Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, attends, making her the first member of her family to visit South Korea since the 1950-53 Korean War.

North Korea's statement firmly pointed at Bolton and his remark as the reason why they are now threatening to pull out of the summit.

Meanwhile, South Korea's Unification Ministry spokesman Baek Tae-hyun said on Friday that Seoul expected Pyongyang to faithfully abide by the agreements between Mr. Kim and Mr. Moon.

The Chinese were treated so indulgently by past administrations, Trump said, he doubted high-level trade talks with the People's Republic would be successful.

"The United States will also have to undertake careful deliberations about the fate of the planned North Korea-U.S. summit in light of this provocative military ruckus jointly conducted with the South Korean authorities", KCNA said.

North Korea warned earlier this week that it could cancel the Singapore summit, specifically deriding the suggestion that the Libyan model of denuclearisation could be used as a template for North Korea. It has been the nature of North Korea's diplomatic dance with the global community that it regularly takes two steps forward only to take three steps back.

In a startling spell of televised negotiating, Trump tried to keep alive his planned summit with Kim next month, offering "very strong" protections to Kim if he seals a deal.

"Unless the serious situation which led to the suspension of the north-south high-level talks is settled, it will never be easy to sit face to face again with the present regime of South Korea", the North's official Korean Central News Agency quoted Ri Son Gwon, chairman of a North Korean agency that deals with inter-Korean affairs, as saying.

"We're willing to do a lot, and he's willing to do a lot also". By contrast, Kim would stay in power if he reaches a deal with the U.S.

The Trump-Kim meeting is scheduled for June 12 in Singapore.
