"Any pipeline project-and there are many multiple pipeline projects in the world that are potentially covered by this sanctions authority-is in an elevated position of sanctions risk", she said.

U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary Sandra Oudkirk, an energy policy expert in the State Department, said the United States opposes the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline because it could increase Russia's "malign influence" in Europe.

During the meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on April 27, Trump offered to refuse from the support of the gas project in the exchange for new trade agreements between the USA and the EU.

The US intends to export more liquefied natural gas, but hindering the construction of Nord Stream 2 does not per se guarantee Washington's sales growth, the German Minister of Economics and Energy warned.

According to Altmaier, the European Union must ensure that Ukraine will remain a gas even after the new pipeline will be built.

"The new project would permit new technologies to be placed along the pipeline route, and that is a threat", she said.

"We just want to make the transit of gas through Ukraine was guaranteed and secured not only by Ukraine and Russian Federation but also the European Union", - quotes the Minister DW.

Oudkirk brushed aside as "false" the suggestion that the U.S.is opposing the pipeline to ensure the US has Europe as a potential market liquefied natural gas.

A consortium of western companies and Russia's Gazprom that is due to build the controversial subsea Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Germany said on Tuesday it was starting preparatory work in the Greifswald bay off Germany's Baltic coast.

The Nord Stream 2 project has said it will tap banks for financing in the fourth quarter of 2018 or early next year.

Mr Johnson responded: "I can assure him that we in the UK Government are well aware of the deep controversy surrounding Nord Stream 2 and we raise it not just in Ukraine but of course with our European friends and partners".
