Fifa's $25bn plan receives fresh criticism from European football leaders

  • Barça, Real Madrid favor increasing number of Club World Championship participants

Infantino, who faces re-election next year, presented the proposal in March for a new summer 24-club World Cup every four years, and a "Global Nations League" with a final eight-country round of matches, also every four years.

One club would also come from the host country with the last side from either South America or Oceania.

Federation Internationale de Football Association has promised a revenue of $25 billion from its proposed new tournaments in a long-term contract with an undisclosed media conglomerate.

The Times reporter Martyn Ziegler claims that UEFA are furious at the proposal as they fear the new tournament could take some of the shine away from the Champions League, the company's main money supplier.

The PFSC consists of elected representatives of the four main stakeholder groups involved in European professional football. Six out of the previous 20 champions lifted the trophy on home soil, while two more hosts made it to the finals, and five more to the semis.

Such a competition could be a game changer for top-level club football in Europe.

This move sparked discontent among the key USA trading partners, especially the EU. Tusk's tweet, however, was one of the more notable, public denunciations of Mr.

UEFA on the other hand has been very critical of FIFA's intentions.

"We honestly believe it could be an attractive competition", he said.

"FIFPro is taking the time needed to gather and assess the views of its unions and consult with players directly about the potential impact on their working lives".

It is understood that Liverpool and Manchester United will be invited to participate in the competition alongside Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Ajax, Inter Milan and Juventus.

Madrid's director of institutional relations, Emilio Butragueno, believes fans would prefer the new tournament over the current seven-team format.
