Elon Musk details plans for LA's LOOP

  • Here's how Elon Musk could make you reach anywhere on Earth in less than an hour

During a Thursday night session that lasted almost an hour, Musk and the Boring Company's project leader, Steve Davis, laid out their case for building a network of tunnels 30 feet or more beneath Los Angeles, starting with a 2.7-mile "proof of concept" dig.

Elon Musk has also suggested building such hyperloop tunnels in other cities outside of Los Angeles like New York, Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Chicago.

Musk reiterated the company vision of having miniature "pods" that would transport up to 16 people across the underground system for just $1 per passenger.

The billionaire's tunnel-digging firm, The Boring Company, is adding the finishing touches to its first ever track, ahead of its opening.

This new Boring Company tunnel was announced last month and will serve as a new full proof-of-concept for the company.

"If you build a tunnel in L.A., you can build one anywhere", Musk said, referring to the various challenges the test tunnel would need to overcome in the city, including seismic conditions, methane gas, oil fields, and regulations.

In January, it emerged that Musk's plans to dig a tunnel under Los Angeles to beat the city's notorious traffic had come a step closer to reality.

Musk, the Silicon Valley high-tech tycoon who founded the Tesla Inc. electric auto maker, also said he would offer free trips through the first two research tunnels he completes to get public feedback before proceeding with a larger system. The trip now can easily take more than an hour by vehicle.

Musk launched his foray into public transit after complaining about traffic on Twitter in late 2016, vowing to "build a boring machine and just start digging".

Musk has claimed the tunnel trip along his proposed route will take five minutes, compared to 45 minutes driving in normal LA traffic.

The Boring Company has already built a shorter tunnel in nearby Hawthorne, where SpaceX's headquarters is located.

"Compared to a flying vehicle, you don't have to worry about bad weather, you can't see it, hear it, feel it".

The plan calls for excavated soil to be compacted into concrete reinforcement segments for the tunnels, or turned into construction bricks.

"This is definitely going to happen", she told Anderson, noting that it should be ready in about 10 years in "Gwynne time" ("I'm sure Elon will want us to go faster").
