Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has paid an official visit to the Russian city of Sochi.

The visit of Assad to Sochi is his second, as last November the president met with Putin in Sochi and hailed the Russian support to Syria.

Putin also congratulated Assad on the "successes of the Syrian government's army in the fight against terrorist groups".

Merkel has already said that the Syrian war has grown into a conflict of "gigantic proportions", and it is impossible to be solved without backing from Russia, Europe and others - but not the US.

"The next task, of course, the economic recovery and humanitarian aid for those people in a hard situation", Mr Putin added. The UN has hosted several rounds of peace talks in Geneva that have made no progress toward ending the conflict.

Haspel Confirmed As CIA's First Female Director
McCain stated, " Gina Haspel is a patriot who loves our country and has devoted her professional life to its service and defense". Six Democrats , however, were heartened by her pledge to never restart harsh interrogation programs, even if Trump requested.

Russia, Iran and Turkey have been attempting to resolve the conflict in the talks that started past year in Astana in competition with a United States and UN-backed Geneva initiative.

"We know that will not be easy since there are countries which do not want stability to return to Syria".

During the dialogue, the parties stressed the need to create conditions for the resumption of the political process full-length, was marked with success and during the Astana process, and the Congress of the Syrian people, held in Sochi. "But with you and other partners and friends, we will continue to make strong progress in the peace process", Assad was quoted as saying in the statement. He thanked the Russian military for playing an important role in the fight.

Syria's conflict began with mass protests against the Assad family's decades-long rule.

Merkel's trip Friday to the Black Sea resort of Sochi is her first visit to Russian Federation in a year and comes amid tense relations between Berlin and Moscow.
