  • Help us settle the debate. What do you hear? Laurel or Yanny? Source Clow Feldman Twitter

"I hear "Yanny.' The sound isn't even close to 'Laurel"..."

It features a robotic voice saying a name and some people hear "Yanny" while others hear "Laurel".

People are divided over whether they hear "Laurel" or "Yanny" in a viral video that seemingly originated on Reddit and has gotten a second life on Twitter. Both are sonorants-you could go on singing them until you run out of air, as opposed to an obstruent like p or t.

This takes us back to the social media debates over the blue/gold or white/black dress and the gray or pink shoe.

Still others said they could hear both.

Trucker Putin opens Russian Federation bridge link with annexed Crimea
Russian Federation annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, drawing sanctions and prompting a deterioration in ties with the West. Ukraine has condemned the project, which cost 228 billion rubles ($3.7 billion). "Putin initiated this project himself".

The newest either-or choice sweeping the internet is a question of auditory perception.

So why do we all hear different things?

The great Yanny vs. Laurel debate exploded on Tuesday after a recording of a computer-generated voice started office fights around the world. "The interesting thing about the word Yanny is that the second frequency that our vocal track produces follows nearly the same path, in terms of what it looks like spectrographically, as Laurel".

Some are hearing "Laurel" being repeated.

Having said that, all we can hear is "laurel" still! "If you remove the high frequencies, you hear Laurel". The tweet has received over 57,000 likes, 25,000 retweets and more than 13,000 comments at the time of publishing this article.
