On the day of the murders, the children's mother, Marina Krim, arrived back at their Upper West Side apartment with her third child to find Lucia and Leo dead in her blood-soaked bathroom.

"My family and I, we create and built". "But she failed. What actually happened is the defendant destroyed her own family".

Saying he agreed with a witness's assessment that Ortega was "pure evil", Judge Carro sentenced her to spend "the rest of your life in state prison with no possibility of parole".

Krim also ripped Ortega's family, who were blamed for setting them up with the deeply troubled women, lying to get her the job. "What is wrong with them?"

"The defendant may think she destroyed Lulu and Leo, but she is a failure in this, too". I don't even know where it came from.

Their family grew by two after the murders when they welcomed sons Felix and Linus and they launched a foundation in honor of Lulu and Leo. Then she placed them in the tub, authorities said.

The mom almost couldn't finish her statement.

Yoselyn Ortega was convicted last month in the deaths of 6-year-old Lucia Krim and 2-year-old Leo Krim. Because I want to talk about all our kids.

Kevin Krim, the children's father, was away on a business trip at the time of the 2012 killings.

He said they called Lucia "Our Little Buddha". We pay for movies too. "She should also know nothing of hope".

He said Leo was "dreamy" and the couple was "madly in love with him".

He noted that she had meticulously planned her suicide, but no one knew when she chose to kill the children too, because she would not say.

Prosecutors said Ortega was driven to kill because she was jealous of Ms Krim and resentful of the cleaning she had to do.

She was putting her affairs in order.

Ortega wept as she spoke briefly - a rare show of emotion for her in the lengthy trial.

After her gut-wrenching six-hour testimony at her former nanny's trial, a visibly exhausted Mrs Krim screamed as she left the courtroom: "You're evil!" Lulu was stabbed more than 30 times, and Leo was stabbed five times.

Ortega had worked for the Krims for some two years before she killed their babies.

Ortega had pleaded insanity but the jury rejected her defence.

The Krims have since been working on legislation that would make it illegal to falsify references for someone working in the childcare industry. "It looked like she was going through some problems", Ruben Diaz told the New York Post.
