It is marked during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, based on the moon and Ramadan will usually begin when the crescent moon is seen, marking the start of a new month. Because of the lunar calendar, the start of Ramazan moves backwards by about eleven days each year.

This was announced by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) on Tuesday (May 15).

All adult Muslims are obliged to fast, with the exception of the mentally disabled and ill ones who could worsen their health condition. Our Constitution ensures Muslims can observe Ramadan in accordance with the dictates of conscience and unimpeded by government.

Muslims continue with work and school during Ramadan, though they are encouraged to inform their employer or teacher of the fact.

Fasting is one of the five fundamental tenets of Islam, which is compulsory for all Muslims except infants, the insane and the invalid.

The common greetings during the month is "Ramadan Mubarak" and "Ramadan Kareem", wishing the recipient a "blessed" and generous Ramadan.

The word Ramadan has Arabic root ramida or ar-ramad meaning scorching heat.

Others who may not fast include pregnant or lactating women whose babies may be harmed, women in their menstrual period or having postpartum bleeding and others in situations that require them to be in their best physical condition (i.e. soldiers on guard duty).
