Facebook is struggling to catch much of the hateful content posted on its platform because the computer algorithms it uses to track it down still require human assistance to judge context, the company said Tuesday.

This report covers Facebook's enforcement efforts between October 2017 to March 2018, and it covers six areas: graphic violence, adult nudity and sexual activity, terrorist propaganda, hate speech, spam and fake accounts.

"We took down 21 million pieces of adult nudity and sexual activity in Q1 2018 - 96 percent of which was found and flagged by our technology before it was reported", said Mr Rosen.

"Whether it's spam, porn or fake accounts, we're up against sophisticated adversaries who continually change tactics to circumvent our controls", Mr Rosen said.

The firm disabled about 583 million fake accounts which were disabled minutes after registering.

Over the last 18 months Facebook has significantly increased the measures aimed at identifying inappropriate content and protect users, said Vice-President of product management, guy Rosen. In addition, Facebook stated that from the remaining accounts, a mere three to four percent were fake. "In other words, of every 10,000 content views, an estimate of 22 to 27 contained graphic violence", the report said.

Facebook took action against 2.5 million pieces of content in the first quarter, up 56 per cent over the previous quarter. The only category AI flagged first less than 86 percent of the time was hate speech, which it flagged first 38 percent of the time.

Men have the opportunity, which is so handsome , to rethink what does it mean to be a man", she said. The actress, for instance, said she'd sold four television shows about women just this year.

As perhaps the most prolific social media service ever, Facebook plays a vital role in connecting us with friends and family around the world.

Similarly, the company has removed 837 million pieces of spam.

"AI still needs to get better before we can use it to effectively remove more linguistically nuanced issues like hate speech in different languages, but we're working on it", said Zuckerberg to CNet. Facebook released its Community Standards Enforcement Preliminary Report on Tuesday, providing a look at the social network's methods for tracking content that violates its standards, how it responds to those violations, and how much content the company has recently removed.

Nearly 86 percent was found by the firm's technology before it was reported by users.

It's also why we are publishing this information.

The report also covers fake accounts, which has gotten more attention in recent months after it was revealed that Russian agents used fake accounts to buy ads to try to influence the 2016 elections.

Meanwhile, Facebook said on Monday it has suspended around 200 apps as part of its investigation into whether companies misused personal user data gathered from the social network.
