  • 2015 nuclear deal should have targeted Iran's policies

China's Foreign Ministry and state media said Javad Zarif was visiting Beijing on Sunday at the head of a large political and economic delegation to "exchange views with relevant parties on the developments of the Iranian nuclear issue".

Based on Rouhani's order, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is expected to leave Tehran for Beijing on Sunday, May 13 and then to Moscow.

Washington's decision to withdraw from the agreement and reimpose sanctions infuriated its allies in Europe as well as China and Russian Federation.

However, Washington's decision to pull out of the global nuclear deal and its threat to reimpose sanctions on firms doing business in Iran has cast fresh doubt over this new trade.

"Together, we emphasise our continuing commitment to the JCPOA".

US President Donald Trump said the deal was "horrible" because of expiry dates on its restrictions and because it did not cover Iran's ballistic missile programme or its regional influence.

"It is not the matter of Iran's nuclear deal, it is the matter of dignity of Europe because President Trump believes in unilateralism; he thinks he's master of the world, he's a business police of the world and he will make a decision and the other countries must obey him", Mr Mianji said.

At the same time that the Trump administration is looking to torpedo one multilateral nuclear agreement, it is touting the possibility of setting up a new one with North Korea.

Zarif told Wang that maintaining the nuclear deal will serve Iran's interest.

Among them is the possible use of an EU "blocking regulation" which would, in essence, ban European companies from respecting American sanctions where those sanctions might damage EU interests, notably trade and the movement of capital.

Despite the U.S. exit, Britain and Iran expressed their commitment to ensuring that the accord is upheld, according to a statement released by British Prime Minister Theresa May's office.

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said, however, that it could be hard to protect European firms from any fallout from the US decision.

Lavrov and Zarif have other issues to discuss as well, primarily the situation in Syria, which deteriorated in the wake of Washington's decision to withdraw from the JCPOA.

"They have faith Russian Federation and China will stand by their side as some of their closest allies and biggest supporters", added Basravi.

"After all, Iran is ready to talk".

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has called the U.S. withdrawal "impudent" and "worthless".

European firms, especially those from France and Germany, rushed to invest in Iran following the 2015 accord, under which Tehran agreed to freeze its nuclear program in return for the repeal of punishing worldwide sanctions.

"It depends on the conduct of other governments", he said.
