Gain for Pakistan's democracy, not so much for India — Civilian-military tussle

  • Imran Khan termed Nawaz's statement a conspiracy to pressurize Pakistan

What he was referring to is the stalled trial in a Rawalpindi anti-terrorism court.

The spokesman said the PML-N as the country's premier popular national political party and its supreme leader (Nawaz Sharif) need no certificate from anybody on their commitment and capacity to preserve, protect and promote Pakistan's national security.

Citing the military and judiciary establishment, Sharif further said, "You can't run a country if you have two or three parallel governments".

To a query on Karnataka exit polls, she said the BJP would form the government in the State. Despite sacrifices, our narrative is not being accepted.

"Militant organisations are active".

Meanwhile, Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Senator Sherry Rehman said that Sharif has endorsed the anti-Pakistan narrative of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi due to his controversial statement about the Mumbai terror attacks. It is absolutely unacceptable.

A spokesman for Sharif said: "At the outset, statement of Nawaz Sharif has been grossly misinterpreted by the Indian media".

The references to Russian President Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are particularly noteworthy.

However, groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is banned as a "terrorist organisation" under Pakistani law, continue to fundraise and carry out political and humanitarian aid activities across the country. The petition has been filed by the Pakistan Awami Tehreek, Geo News reported. What is significant is that the Pakistanis are being asked to change course by Xi himself.

"The participants unanimously rejected the allegations and condemned the fallacious assertions", it said.

PNB posts biggest ever quarterly loss of Rs 13417 crore in Q4
PNB's earnings will be pressurised as it will have to make enough provisions to deal with the scam-related payouts to other banks. The duo have denied the allegations against them, and authorities said they both left the country before the fraud was uncovered.

The former premier lamented that Pakistan has isolated itself. They added that Ajmal Kasab's hurried execution is the main reason why the case still pending disposal. This has become a "core impediment in the finalisation of the trial".

The NSC said that India on a number of occasions refused to extend cooperation. This is in line with his combative mood.

Throwing his weight behind Nawaz, PM Abbasi also reiterated his support for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Quaid.

Pakistani and Indian media, especially TV channels, are playing up Sharif's interview as a "breach of national interest" or alternately a tacit admission of Pakistan's involvement in the Mumbai carnage.

Abbasi also apprised the journalists of the NSC meeting as well as his follow-up meeting with Nawaz today.

"Will speak the truth no matter what the consequences are", he said. In response, he is seeking to discredit the army in the eyes of the people. Very little, for India, but potentially a lot, in Pakistan.

He called Sharif the modern-day Mir Jafar.

"Whoever is found guilty", he said while addressing a roaring crowd, "hang him publicly". But this much has to be given to him - he is showing courage in taking on the army and the courts.

Pakistan has come under pressure from the United States and India to do more, however, to shut down groups such as the Afghan Taliban, the Haqqani Network and Lashkar-e-Taiba, which target USA forces in Afghanistan or Indian forces in the disputed region of Kashmir. He claimed that although Pakistan had cooperated with the Indian government for information-sharing regarding every terrorist incident, India had not reciprocated for incidents taking place inside Pakistan.

"We must look into it", Sharif had told Dawn newspaper in an interview. "Something has to change"? No official statements have been made, however, by India's foreign or interior ministries.
