  • Facebook users hit by fresh data scandal

A letter (PDF) from the social network to the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee made it clear that MPs' threat of a formal summons the next time Zuck lands in the country hadn't scared the CEO into giving evidence in person.

But in a letter dated May 14 (PDF), Facebook's United Kingdom head of public policy, Rebecca Stimson, replied that Zuckerberg still "has no plans to meet with the committee or travel to the United Kingdom at the present time".

Collins said that Cambridge Analytica was one of the areas where Facebook's response had been insufficiently detailed.

"Given that these were follow-up questions to questions Mr Schroepfer previously failed to answer, we expected both detail and data, and in a number of cases got excuses".

Earlier, it was revealed that the British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica misused data of 87 million app users.

It also apologised for "this unintentional mistake and is now conducting internal investigations to quickly rectify this mistake". While Taiwan is self-governed, only a minority of countries recognize its sovereignty as a nation independent of China.

The company CEO Mark Zuckerberg had promised a thorough investigation and audit into apps that had access to information before Facebook changed its platform policies in 2014 - significantly reducing the data apps could access.

GSR developed a Facebook app that reportedly collected data from people who signed up to use the app as well as information from their Facebook friends, without the explicit approval of all involved. It added that it had taken action against 370,000 apps in 2017. The Verge highlights that the data collection project may have begun in 2009 and there was some discussion of Cambridge Analytica acquiring the data, though apparently it was turned down due to its involvement in politics. "Unlike the brand safety issue, none of our advertisers have paused their advertising" because of Cambridge Analytica.

The move has been slammed by critics because it effectively slips 1.5 billion users out of the rights offered under the General Data Protection Regulation.

On Reddit, readers are condemning IBM for sending more than 100 executives to Capitol Hill this week in an effort to prevent US policy makers from copying GDPR, Europe's new privacy standards, which give citizens the right to access their personal data and learn how it's being used, prevents companies from processing personal data unless users give explicit consent, and requires them to adopt privacy by design principles, among other restrictions.

MPs have again criticised Facebook for submitting "insufficient" evidence to a parliamentary inquiry about how it handles data.
