Driver: Tesla's Autopilot engaged during crash

  • Embattled Musk 'thoroughly reorganising' Tesla

Just last week, the NTSB opened an investigation into a case where a fatal Fort Lauderdale crash raised eyebrows, as it was the agency's fourth active probe into the automaker's electric vehicles.

In his email to staff, Musk said Tesla was "flattening the management structure to improve communication", combining functions and trimming activities "not vital to the success of our mission" in the reorganisation. According to Wall Street Journal, he has joined Waymo's safety team that is headed by Ron Medford. "To be clear, we will continue to hire rapidly in critical hourly and salaried positions to support the Model 3 production ramp and future product development".

However, representatives of the company repeatedly warned the owners of electric Tesla, that when using the autopilot, they should still be careful and watch the road. Waymo said on Sunday that Matthew Schwall had joined it from Tesla, where he was its main technical contact with United States safety investigators, and last week Tesla said senior vice president of engineering Doug Field was taking time off to recharge.

The reorganization announcement comes on the heels of news that a senior executive has left the company for its rival Alphabet's Waymo, and a statement from Tesla that another executive-the senior vice president for engineering-has taken some time off.

The company is developing multiple new vehicles, including a semi truck, and has registered a new auto firm in Shanghai in a probable step towards production in China.

Investors gave Mr Musk some rare criticism after the call in which he referred to one analyst as a boring bonehead.

A Tesla Model S that crashed into a stopped fire truck was operating in autopilot mode, Utah police said.

The Tesla driver, who claimed to be using the autosteer feature, was transported to hospital with a broken right foot, while the driver of the vehicle that was hit was checked for injuries related to whiplash but not admitted for further checks.

"Witnesses indicated the Tesla Model S did not brake prior to impact", the statement said.

The company said in a statement on Monday: Tesla has not yet received any data from the vehicle and thus does not know the facts of what occurred, including whether autopilot was engaged.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter to criticise media coverage of the Utah smash.

Additionally, the NTSB is also looking into a 2016 accident in which the driver of a Tesla slammed into a tractor trailer and died.
