The actress, for instance, said she'd sold four television shows about women just this year.

Speaking to Variety magazine at the Women In Motion panel at Cannes Film Festival, she said: "The good is that there's so many". "It is actors too".

"When you start seeing people standing up for their rights and being heard, it becomes contagious", she said.

Hayek went on, "It's a proven fact that women of colour are less listened to".

The Desperado and Frida star said her fellow actresses should be "both impatient and patient and continue the pressure" against gender inequality.

"Women are not a minority in the world, yet the current state of our industry says otherwise [.] We stand together on these steps today as a symbol of our determination and progress".

The Mexican-born star subsequently claimed that one way to achieve equality would be for actors to spurn "inflated fees". "If the movie's budget is $10 million, the [male] actor has to understand that if he is making $9.7m, it is going to be hard for equality", Hayek added. She is developing five movies, and they are all about women, she said.

In the wake of the scandals that have followed Weinstein's downfall, Hayek said men in Hollywood "are terrified" and that "predators are hiding". "You feel this very palpable atmosphere".

Hayek also claimed Harvey Weinstein specifically contested her claim of sexual harassment and that of Lupita Nyong'o because they're women of colour.

The actress said she was "shocked" to discover how much of the producer's alleged impropriety had been hushed up. "I can't find enough female writers and directors", Hayek said.

"It is a very exciting time for men now. Men have the opportunity, which is so handsome, to rethink what does it mean to be a man", she said.

The number of women taking part is the same as the number of films directed by women to have been selected to feature at Cannes in its more than seven-decade history.

Later on Sunday, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins will receive a special award from the initiative, which annually stages talks by leading women in Hollywood.
