Dakota Pitts, the five-year-old son of IN police officer Rob Pitts, who was shot and killed by a homicide suspect, receives a guard of honour on his first day back to school following the tragedy.

Dakota hadn't been back to his IN elementary school until yesterday and he asked for one of his dad's co-workers to take him.

WGNTV reports that Pitt's son, Dakota, returned back to school Monday in touching fashion.

Pitts was killed earlier this month in a shootout with a homicide suspect who later died from injuries he suffered in the crossfire, authorities said.

"He will definitely know his dad was a hero", Pitts' sister Kelli Jones told the affiliate.

Alonso: Top six still in 'another league'
Alonso reiterated his view that the vehicle he is racing this weekend should have been available for the start of the season in Australia.

He stops and waves to someone behind the camera, and an officer then gives him a SWAT shirt.

He says he simply wants to show his support and it's not the first time he's seen how much community support means to the officers.

Seventy Terre Haute Police Officers and Vigo County Sheriff's Deputies waited for 5-year-old Dakota Pitts when he arrived at school.

The suspect opened fire from a second floor Terre Haute apartment building after he was approached by four investigators, police said. Wolfe was armed with a handgun and fired at the officers, striking Pitts.

It is another tragic loss for the Wabash Valley and the Terre Haute Police Department, ' Sgt. Joe Watts of the Indiana State Police said.
