  • North Korea's last nuclear test triggered an earthquake

"A ceremony is scheduled to dismantle nuclear testing facility between 23 and 25 May, depending on wear conditions", agency reported, citing a communiqué from North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

North Korea is continuing to make grand gestures ahead of its upcoming summit with the US and South Korea, announcing on Saturday that it will dismantle its only known nuclear test site, complete with an accompanying ceremony, between May 23 and 25 (depending on the weather).

Pyongyang said Saturday that it will detonate explosives in all tunnels of the test ground, completely block entrances, remove all observation facilities, research institutes and structures of guard units at the test-facility.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reports that journalists from the US, South Korea, China, Russia and the United Kingdom will be invited to observe a ceremony marking the start of the process, which will be held at some point between 23 May and 25 May, depending on weather conditions.

Last week, USA intelligence said the North Koreans had started pulling cables from the tunnels at their nuclear test site - a first step toward closing them down, CBS News' national security correspondent David Martin reported.

A dismantling "ceremony" will be held and journalist from the U.S., South Korea and elsewhere will be invited, Pyongyang said.

This week the North released three Korean-Americans it had detained into the care of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who was making his second trip to Pyongyang in two months.

North Korea has conducted all six of its nuclear tests at Punggye-ri. He said on April 20 that his nation already had "completed its mission" to test its weapons capability.

It also said North Korea will provide all global journalists with charter flights from Beijing to North Korea's Wonsan, and from there, they will be offered a special charter train to Pyunggye-ri. Two of the North Korean missiles passed over the Japanese island of Hokkaido.

The spectacle of the North shuttering and even destroying its nuclear facilities is not new.

She also stressed the importance of the USA troops stationed in South Korea, as observers speculate Pyongyang may ask for their withdrawal. However, a final attempt by Bush to complete an agreement to fully dismantle North Korea's nuclear weapons program collapsed that December when the North refused to accept US-proposed verification methods.

"We are starting off on a new footing - I really think we have a very good chance of doing something very meaningful". "It's never been taken this far, there has never been a relationship like this".
