Is Washington Too Focused on Iran's Nuclear Program?

  • Is Washington Too Focused on Iran's Nuclear Program?

Crude oil prices are showing a climb in the aftermath of President Trump's announcement on the Iran nuclear deal.

Iranians reacted with a mix of sadness, resignation and defiance on May 9 to U.S. President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the nuclear deal, with sharp divisions among officials on how best to respond. He intends to "impose the "highest level" of economic sanctions on Iran", which will likely hurt the deal for everyone else involved.

What about the other signatories? It was struck by Mr Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said India was closely monitoring the situation arising out of Trump's announcement to pull the USA out of the Iran nuclear deal. The United States no longer makes empty threats. He said, "India has always been maintaining that the Iranian nuclear issue should be resolved peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy". In 2005, when India voted against Iran at the global atomic energy agency (IAEA), Iran had retaliated by cancelling a deal for selling liquefied natural gas or LNG.

He is also unhappy that the Iran nuclear deal didn't forbid Tehran from continuing with its ballistic missile program.

In the worst case scenario, Iran would retaliate by restarting to enrich even more uranium and pulling out of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons altogether.

Meanwhile, for nations contemplating striking their own sensitive deals with Mr Trump, such as North Korea, the withdrawal will increase suspicions they can not expect the U.S. to stick to worldwide agreements it signs. "And so getting oil from Saudi Arabia may offset that".

Chagai Tzuriel, director general of Israel's Ministry of Intelligence, told The Canadian Press that he was seeking support from Canada and Western countries for either cancelling or strengthening a deal that his government views as flawed and ultimately ineffective in stopping Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Trudeau regrets Trump decision to pull out of Iran nuclear agreement
Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has already said that Israel won't exist in 25 years if it continues to destabilize the region. Mr Trump said this week that the 2015 nuclear deal which allowed for the lifting of sanctions was not tough enough on Iran .

United States president Donald Trump has warned of "severe consequences" if Iran restarts its nuclear activity, a day after he announced America's withdrawal from a landmark nuclear deal.

"You heard last night that the president of America made some silly and superficial comments", Khamenei said.

He added that, despite the U.S. government withdrawing from the agreement, it should not prevent the remaining parties from honouring their commitments to the agreement.

Merkel said in a speech that Germany remains committed to the agreement and will try to do everything it can to ensure Iran fulfills its future commitments.

Macron, who in recent weeks made a deliberately public effort to talk Trump around, said in an interview with German media that it was vital for the deal's other parties to reaffirm their commitment.

"While the JCPOA was far from ideal, by signing the agreement, Iran gave up 98 percent of its uranium stockpile, dismantled 2/3 of its centrifuges, rendered its heavy water nuclear reactor unusable, and agreed to unprecedented inspections that provide critical insight into, and early warning about, any attempts by Iran to accelerate its nuclear program", Warner said.

This has already driven a wedge between the US and its European allies, and that wedge could get a lot bigger in six months, when the Department of the Treasury says it is scheduled to sanction foreign financial institutions, including state banks, that purchase oil and other products from Iranian financial institutions.
