  • Surgeons grow soldier's new ear in her FOREARM

That's when doctors gave her a shocking proposal: to grow a new ear in her forearm and then transplant it.

"(The ear) will have fresh arteries fresh veins and even a fresh nerve so she'll be able to feel it", Dr. Johnson said. Her cousin who was with her in the vehicle had minor injuries, but she suffered head injuries, spine fractures, road rash, and lost her ear, CNN reports.

Making her an ear from scratch has taken more than a year but Burrage now has just two more surgeries to go.

"As a young active-duty Soldier, they deserve the best reconstruction they can get", Johnson said.

In 2016, while returning to Fort Bliss, Texas, after visiting family in MS, a tire blowout changed Burrage's life in an instant. A blown-out tire reportedly caused the auto to veer off the road and tumble a number of times before she was thrown from the vehicle.

The Army announced Monday that the procedure performed on Pvt.

A Texas soldier recently had an ear transplant after hers was torn off in a auto accident two years ago. Later, it was reattached to her head by surgeons at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in Texas. Johnson was able to reopen her ear canal, which had closed from the trauma suffered in her accident.

Although Burrage's hearing might be functioning again, her recovery isn't done yet. "Why should she have to deal with having an artificial ear for the rest of her life?"

After going through months of rehab, Burrage, who wasn't feeling comfortable with her looks, made a decision to speak with a surgeon regarding her ear options.

Burrage will eventually have sensation back in her ear once her rehab is complete. While many civilians around the world have successfully undergone the procedure, Burrage is the first American soldier to receive the novel reconstruction process, according to a statement from the U.S. Army. "I was just scared at first but wanted to see what he could do", she said, according to the Army's statement.

Doctors have been working on body part regeneration for a long time, and have recently found success in reconstructive surgeries like Shamika's. NBC reports she has two surgeries remaining and is feeling optimistic.

"I looked back at the road as I hit the brakes", she said.
