  • The Man Who Killed Don Quixote lands Cannes debut, loses Amazon distribution

Terry Gilliam reportedly suffered a stroke on the weekend, putting his appearance at Cannes Film Festival in doubt.

Shortly after the decision was handed down, festival director Theirry Fremaux announced that Gilliam's embattled film will close the festival as planned.

In a broader, separate case over the rights to the film, a Paris court issued a ruling favorable to Branco previous year.

In a statement, Branco said although the ruling went against him, he is not dissatisfied because the film can still not be commercially released until the legal dispute is settled. Multiple trade outlets have confirmed Amazon's decision to withdraw from distributing the film, though the company itself has not yet released a formal announcement.

"Whilst we don't comment on personal health matters, we can confirm that Terry Gilliam is now at home preparing for his trip to Cannes next week in support of 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote'".

Terry Gilliam medieval double feature: 5:30 and 9:15 p.m. Friday, May 11.

After Branco and Gilliam signed their agreement in 2016, funding for the film failed to come through, which sent Gilliam in search of new backers. The star was mistakenly reported to have passed away back in 2015, and Terry took to Twitter to mock the mishap, writing: "I APOLOGISE FOR BEING DEAD especially to those who have already bought tickets to the upcoming talks".

In a sharply worded response to the actions of Branco and his lawyers last month, Cannes organizers said they would respect decision of the French judge at a hearing that began May 7.

On top of the legal problems, the film has suffered flooded sets, insurance woes, and the deaths of two actors once attached to the Quixote role - Jean Rochefort and John Hurt.

Bringing the completed film to Cannes at last and landing the closing-night position is Gilliam's long-awaited reward.

Portuguese producer Paulo Branco had claimed he also has rights to the movie, but the court instead ruled in favour of the Cannes organisers.
