Ex-Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, is out of coma and showing promising early signs of recovery following emergency surgery on a brain hemorrhage, family sources say.

The 76-year-old has been in intensive care at the Salford Royal Hospital after collapsing at his Cheshire home on Saturday.

Former United forward Wayne Rooney, who now plays for Everton, gave his support to the Ferguson family, tweeting: "Get well soon Boss".

"It's sad, but I know his character and I know he has that fight in him".

Cristiano Ronaldo, who Ferguson signed for United as a teenager, tweeted: "My thoughts and prayers are with you, my dear friend".

He continued: "Sir Alex is a fantastic person on and off the field". But I gather that the operation has been a success.

Ferguson won 38 trophies in 26 seasons as United boss before retiring from his role at Old Traford in 2013.

United may have had an ageing squad at the time of Ferguson's departure, which was always going to have a deflationary impact, but the winning analytic - that intuitive understanding between players and staff - was still there and could have continued to a certain extent. When you're young it's nice to be linked with the biggest clubs in the world.

Ryan Giggs told BBC Wales: "Now is the time to pray and hope he can make a full recovery".

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte added: "I have had the chance to know him and his wife". Support has flooded in from the football world and from those outside the game for Ferguson who is said to have complained of being unwell since Thursday. "All the Manchester City fans in the stadium, you can not find one person who does not wish the best for an fantastic person", said Guardiola.

That request has been widely followed and it has been left to the men that played for and against him, as well as managers and football fans, to pay their own dues. "I got a text on Saturday evening and I couldn't quite believe it".

'Everyone at the club is wishing him all the best and his family as well.

"He told me he is doing a lot of exercises, and he looked very happy but that kind of accident can happen".
