  • Atletico Madrid v Arsenal – story of the match

Arsene Wenger reflected on "a very sad day" after he oversaw his final home game as Arsenal manager but insisted that his successor inherits a team that isn't far from challenging from the Premier League title.

"But I will also feel grateful for having led this club - that I cherish so much - for such a long time".

While not the send-off he wanted, Arsène Wenger received the fond farewell from Arsenal fans that he deserved.

Sean Dyche's Burnley should have proved to have been a more hard side to face, however, with European football already confirmed for the Clarets, the hosts managed to make the most of the afternoon's action. It is what unites us in every cell of our body, those dreams and worries.

"I would like as well to thank everyone at the club who makes it so special, I would invite you, really push, support these players and the staff who remains behind me, these group of players has a special quality".

Thursday's Europa League semi-final defeat to Atletico Madrid meant there would be no fairytale ending to his reign in terms of silverware but the overall supporter reception remained positive, in spite of regular protests over the course of the past few seasons.

"I would like to finish with one simple phrase - I will miss you". Well done. Bye bye.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Wenger said: "It's a big job".

"The fans may be lost at the start, but they will have a new manager but they can continue the work as the basics are here", the Frenchman said.

Thrilled with the victory, the Nigeria worldwide took to social media to applaud the Gunners for giving the 68-year-old an appropriate send-off. The club has gone through the most hard period in the last 10 years, building the stadium.

Wenger began his speech by sending well wishes to his greatest rival manager, legendary Manchester United man Sir Alex Ferguson, who is recovering from brain surgery.

And Wenger has promised to return to the stadium he helped build, saying: 'I would be happy to sit in the North Bank. I trust his strength and optimistic character to get over it quickly and well.

Wenger is set to play one final game with the Gunners away to Huddersfield next weekend and stressed that the squad he has assembled is more than capable of challenging for silverware in the future.
