Such an order would be sought to stop the government from using seized materials, according to a person familiar with the investigation.

The search warrant also reportedly sought communications between Cohen and campaign aides about possible sources of negative publicity before the election.

The warrant indicates that federal prosecutors may be examining interactions Trump might have had with his longtime attorney about tamping down unflattering stories as he sought to win the White House. Trump called Cohen this morning, before the court hearing.

Asked for comment on Wednesday, Stephen Ryan, a lawyer for Cohen, referred to his earlier description of the raids as "completely inappropriate and unnecessary".

In forceful language, prosecutors struck back at claims by Trump and others that the Monday raids violated the attorney-client privilege between Trump and Cohen or amounted to an improper extension of the work of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

The lawyers say the records are protected by attorney-client privilege and they want to review the documents before prosecutors analyze them.

"We're not being honest when we don't recognize that there are people who are hell bent on destroying President Trump, and they don't care how they do it".

A subpoena is more typical, to protect attorney-client privilege.

In the filing with a court in NY, prosecutors blacked out a section describing what laws they believe Trump attorney Michael Cohen has broken, but they said the "crimes being investigated involve acts of concealment" and suspected fraud.

The investigation of Cohen, which was referred by special counsel Robert Mueller to the USA attorney's office for the Southern District of NY, appears to be focused in part on the lawyer's involvement with payments made to two women who alleged affairs with Trump.

Prosecutors are interested in whether Cohen, who had no official role in the 2016 campaign, co-ordinated with it to quash the release of anything detrimental to it and whether that violated campaign finance laws - a new front in the investigation into Cohen.

Some of Trump's allies are reportedly concerned that the Federal Bureau of Investigation seized taped conversations by Cohen, who liked to record calls. It was previously reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation took information related to Cohen's payment to Daniels, but this is the first indication that there may be recordings related to the nondisclosure agreements with Daniels and McDougal. Trump could be heard telling former NBC host Billy Bush that he could "grab" women by their genitals because of his fame.

Prosecutors said today their criminal probe is focused on Cohen's personal business dealings.

The recording was an outtake from a segment that the entertainment-news program shot in 2005 when Trump had a cameo on "Days of Our Lives".
