Retiring Paul Ryan, "leaving this majority in good hands"

  • House Speaker Paul Ryan leaves after a weekly news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington U.S

"I think they're wrong", Ryan said in June 2016.

Moments later, Ryan told reporters that if he were to stay for one more term, his children - now all teens - would only know him as a weekend dad. "I just can't let that happen, so I will be setting new priorities in my life, and I will also be leaving incredibly proud of what we have accomplished".

Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, predicted Wednesday that the race to replace Ryan as speaker will be settled before the midterm elections. VICE calls Ryan's resignation "a gift to House Democrats" since it proves conservatives can't hold the legislative body permanently, even during the Trump administration.

With Ryan's decision to not seek reelection, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise could seek the speaker job, with McCarthy as the favourite.

The only declared Republican was Paul Nehlen, who was banned from Twitter for a series of posts criticized as racist or anti-Semitic.

Asked to what degree Mr Trump's presidency influenced his decision not to seek re-election, Mr Ryan said, "Not at all". "Paul has challenged us all to raise our gaze, and he is deeply respected on both sides of the aisle because of his principles and commitment to the American idea". Internal polling from the Democratic party had Bryce down only 6 percentage points versus Ryan at the end of 2017. When Ryan was chosen, he was considered a compromise candidate to replace John Boehner, who had fallen deeply out of favor with the GOP.

Congress' most powerful lawmaker said he would not stand for another term in his Wisconsin district this November. Ryan, the vice presidential candidate with Mitt Romney in 2012, is, after all, only 48.

Ruyan cited family reasons for his decision.

Congress was mired in partisan budget talks at the time, approving limited spending appropriations as emergency measures rather than passing a full budget. He's not the first congressional Republican to do so, and with the top man leading the way, more are sure to follow.

In his prepared remarks, Ryan focused on the tax law that passed a year ago as a key legacy he left behind and spoke at length about his desire to go home to Wisconsin to be home with his family.

Ryan's announcement that he won't seek another term comes after Team Ryan, a joint fundraising committee, reported it raised a record $11 million in the first quarter of 2018, according to a press release provided by the campaign on Tuesday. Obama signed it into law later that year.

Stefanik, R-Willsboro, has served with Ryan, R-Wisconsin, in the House since 2015.

The party, deeply fractured between conservatives and moderates, has been described as ungovernable. Boehner resigned from Congress rather than face an ouster.

Following the reports, Brendan Buck, counselor to the Speaker, confirmed that Ryan would retire.

"You have this current era in which clearly Ryan was not the (voice) of the Republican Party". He also wants to overturn the Affordable Care Act, which expanded the nation's health care system.

Ryan was noted for an intense workout routine, sleeping on a cot in his office in the U.S. Capitol and returning to his home in Janesville, WI, every weekend. He said he wanted to spend more time with his wife and three children.
