Akani Simbine grabbed the spotlight and stunned Jamaica's Yohan Blake in the men's 100 metres final at the Commonwealth Games on Monday as athletics began a new era without Usain Bolt.

"It is an incredible feeling to come here and do what I could have done, and I've won the gold medal which is something I knew I could do".

The 24-year-old Simbine finished strongest and won comfortably in the end, but the race itself is a bit of a blur for him. I got up running but I couldn't catch them. "I felt (it was) just like a big embrace and I wanted to give them something that reflected the best I could do, and my only real regret today was that I was unable to show them", she said.

"We are immensely proud of our achievement, it is the first Commonwealth Games for all four of us, and we are extremely happy with the silver medal", Kruger said.

Instead, having been jokingly told by former training partner Bolt that there would be "problems" if he returned to Jamaica with anything less than the Commonwealth title, he was left with bronze.

"Congrats @AkaniSimbine #Gold", the eight-time Olympic champion tweeted.

"It's my first global title and for me it's a milestone, a stepping stone towards the world championships, and the Olympics and more competitions and more worldwide competitions", said Simbine, adding he needed to call his mother watching back home in South Africa.

He failed to rise to the occasion, though, as Simbine surged to an emphatic victory, with Bruintjies ensuring Blake took the third step on the podium. "It was never meant to be I guess".

The Jamaicans had already missed out on gold in the women's 100m final, which went to Michelle-Lee Ahye of Trinidad and Tobago.

The South Africa flag bearer dictated the race from the front, setting the pace the whole way and finishing in 4 minutes, 5.86 seconds to lead all qualifiers into the final.

"I guess the best Hollie won tonight - the one ending with i.e".

Olympic and world 800-meter champion Caster Semenya started her quest for a Commonwealth Games double with a commanding win in the heats of the 1,500.

Blake - the 2011 World Championship 100m victor whose personal best of 9.69sec remains the second fastest in history behind former training partner Usain Bolt - had been heavily favoured but never recovered from a bad start.

Makwala, who was barred from competing in the world championships' 400 final in London a year ago over illness fears, qualified fastest for the final with a time of 45.00 seconds.
