  • Former president Zuma to appear in court on corruption charges

The crowd that gathered to support former President Jacob Zuma is seen reflected in his glasses as he waits to speak after appearing on corruption charges at the Durban High Court, South Africa.

Obed Mbatha, who says he grew up with Mr Zuma and considers himself a friend, took the day off work to come and support Mr Zuma.

"This matter is adjourned to 8th June 2018 which is a provisional date and the two accused before court are released on warning", said Judge Themba Sishi.

Zuma did not look at Guerrier, or attempt to communicate with her until the court session was over.

Zuma is facing 16 charges relating to 783 payments he allegedly received in connection with the controversial arms deal. He has served as president since 2009 and has faced numerous allegations of corruption which he denies.

He was replaced by Cyril Ramaphosa after nine years in power. Zuma asked? "The truth will come out". What have I done?

"I want to thank you as I thanked you many years ago".

Zuma escaped an impeachment attempt over the issue in parliament in September 2016, when ANC lawmakers voted overwhelmingly against it. He is one of us - we will not desert him.

Speaking in isiZulu, the former president said some people were pushing for the trial to go ahead but that they would be sorry. "Zuma! Zuma!" by supporters in the public gallery.

"They can't even debate in parliament‚" he said.

"People are lucky we can't beat them up anymore‚ otherwise I would have beaten up a lot of people".

Zuma's supporters are expected to rally at the city's high court on Friday to protest against his prosecution, which was announced just four weeks after he resigned under mounting pressure from the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party.

The case against Zuma has been a long time coming.

Thales, which supplied naval vessels as part of the deal, also faces charges of corruption and a company representative from France appeared in court alongside Zuma.

Last year, the supreme court of appeal in Pretoria, South Africa's highest court, declared that the decision to set aside the corruption charges was irrational. He resigned February 14 on the orders of his celebration, the African National Congress.

This after Zuma said he would challenge the decision of National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) boss Shaun Abrahams to reinstate charges against him.

Downer, who is the same advocate who successfully prosecuted fraudster Schabir Shaik, told the court that he was aware of the review application that Zuma needed to file.
