If they wanted to, Apple could make plenty of money by monetizing the customer, Cook said Wednesday with MSNBC's Chris Hayes and Swisher. "We've elected not to do that", he said.

There are some high profile names among the enraged and outspoken, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, who suggested that Facebook should be regulated at this point.

"I think the best regulation is no regulation, is self-regulation", Cook said. "However, I think we're beyond that here". "Privacy to us is a human right, a civil liberty". He has since made an apology for the misuse of personal data belonging to millions of users of the social network and talked about the steps the company will take to safeguard users' privacy.

Cook feels this sort of data collection is a result of Facebook treating their users as the product instead of the customer. Thanks to the crisis at Facebook, shares of Google, Twitter, Amazon, Netflix and Tesla (for reasons all of its own) have all dropped in the past week.

However, he also said that self-regulation is the best thing companies could do, stressing how Apple chose to never use or sell the data of their customers.

"This case is about much more than a single phone or a single investigation, so when we received the government's order we knew we had to speak out", Cook said in an email to employees in February 2016.

Facebook issues print ad apology in papers for Cambridge Analytica scandal
The discovery of the warning raises new questions about why Facebook did not act sooner to protect users' private information. The quiz app that Zuckerberg mentions was created by Cambridge researcher Alexsandr Kogan.

When asked what he would do if he were in Zuckerberg's position, Cook replied: "What would I do?"

Hollywood has joined the #DeleteFacebook movement too.

Several tech companies have voiced their frustrations with Facebook's handling of the recent Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal.

"I was further appalled to learn that Facebook's reaction to such a violation was to suspend the account of the Cambridge Analytica whistleblower", he added.

On Friday, another Silicon Valley CEO, Elon Musk, deleted the Facebook pages of two of his companies, Tesla and SpaceX.

Responding to challenges from his Twitter followers, Musk deleted the Facebook accounts of all his companies.
