Trump axes HR McMaster, names John Bolton as national security adviser

  • Former US Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton speaks at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Oxon Hill Maryland

He has been a long-time advocate of pre-emptive military action against North Korea and Iran, options that the USA foreign policy establishment in general balks at.

Mr Bolton, 69, has always been a polarizing figure in Washington foreign policy circles.

"Just spoke to (at) POTUS and Gen. HR McMaster _ contrary to reports they have a good working relationship and there are no changes at the NSC", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted late last Thursday night. President George W. Bush's inexperience effectively delegated enormous power to his foreign policy advisers, with little presidential monitoring or oversight, contributing to the planning failures in the Iraq War. One reason comes from psychology. But with Bolton and Pompeo soon to be by his side, Trump's worst and most violent instincts on foreign affairs may find their willing enablers. Bolton, in particular, has espoused extreme views in recent years - even for the Trump administration - on the proper course of action on Iran and North Korea. He said Bolton will take over April 9.

Newly named White House national security adviser John Bolton tried to distance himself from his past statements on Thursday, mere minutes after being named President Donald Trump's new top national security aide.

Bolton's views should also concern US allies. But in a verbal briefing he personally delivered to Trump before the call, McMaster didn't emphasize what not to say about the election, said the people, who discussed the matter on condition of anonymity.

Bolton has served in the Republican administrations of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, and served as a Bush lawyer during the 2000 Florida recount. He added that the US will use MEK to achieve that aim. As everyone now knows, Bolton was one of the chief cheerleaders and architects for the Iraq war. But an argument made by political scientist Randall Calvert about "biased information" suggests an unlikely, but still possible, way that Bolton might have a surprising effect.

Netanyahu's release from hospital imminent - Israeli PM's office says
The planning permit waiver for the embassy will last for three years, the ministry statement said. The status of Jerusalem is among the most contentious in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"You just hired someone who is likely to start another wasteful war!", tweeted another.

In other words, if Bolton advises against war, Trump would likely sit up and take notice. "We're seeing more of the true Trump for sure because he's slowly winnowing the opposing points of view", Sen.

It is this racism and xenophobia, not to mention lack of basic empathy, that provides the toxic fuel for Bolton's pro-war and pro-regime change positions.

McMaster's exit also comes as Trump faces tough decisions on whether to punish Russia for the attempted assassination of a former spy in the U.K. His security advisers discussed on Wednesday a list of options to present to the president, including fresh sanctions, closing consulates and expelling Russians from the USA, according to two people familiar with the matter. One set of views he shares with Trump is disdain for global institutions, alliances and norms - the often-invisible backbone of much of US foreign policy for the past 70 years. In this sense, Trump's choice to appoint Bolton just two weeks after his acceptance of an invitation from Kim Jong-un for a historic U.S.

Education Minister Naftali Bennett, who leads Jewish Home, tweeted that Bolton was "an extraordinary security expert, experienced diplomat and a stalwart friend of Israel."Environment Minister Zeev Elkin of Netanyahu's Likud echoed his cabinet colleagues, telling Tel Aviv radio station 102 FM Bolton was "unquestionably a friend of Israel for many years, including in his position as United States ambassador to the UN".

Bolton told Fox News' "The Story" that his past comments are now "behind me" and what matters is "what the President says". "John Bolton stands out among them", Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked of Jewish Home said in a statement."The Trump administration is turning out to be the most friendly administration to Israel ever", she added.
