  • VW rumoured to unveil a midsize pickup in NY this week

Sister site Pickuptrucks.com has picked up a report that Volkswagen will unveil a surprise concept for a Volkswagen Atlas SUV-based mid-size pickup truck at the 2018 New York International Auto Show on Wednesday.

Sources familiar with the matter told the automotive publication that the concept, based on the Atlas, could be built at Volkswagen's Chattanooga, Tennessee assembly plant, now home to the Tiguan, Passat, Atlas and upcoming 5-seater Atlas variant.

Volkswagen brand officials want to strengthen sales in regions such as the US with more product designed for local tastes.

The new truck would be a unibody construction and based on the MQB platform used by the 7-seat version of the Atlas SUV.

If the pickup concept receives positive reviews during the NY show, it could go into production relatively soon and would be built at the Tennessee assembly plant, Automotive News reported.

Volkswagen isn't the only one hopping into the pickup foray, with Hyundai confirming past year that it's building a midsize, light duty truck by 2020.

Investigative journalist Sandeep Sharma mowed down by truck in MP's Bhind district
Navin Nishchal, who worked for Dainik Bhaskar, and his colleague Vijay Singh were on a bike when they were hit by a auto . Bhopal Press Club president told the media that Sharma had informed the local administration about the issue.

Automotive News quotes an insider source as saying VW CEO Herbert Diess has backed the project from a very early stage.

If you've spent anytime overseas or south of the border-chances are you may have spotted a Volkswagen pickup truck called the Amarok or a smaller one called the Saveiro.

A source tells the newspaper that VW is thinking about developing a pickup based on its Chattanooga-built, three-row Atlas SUV.

No other details were divulged about the possible midsize pickup, which VW will aim at rivals such as the Honda Ridgeline, Chevrolet Colorado, and upcoming Ford Ranger.

The 2019 Ridgeline, which starts at $30,965 (including shipping), produced US sales of 34,749 previous year.
