He continued to say, "The reality here is that this isn't rocket science, I mean there's a lot of hard work that we need to do to make it harder for nation-states like Russian Federation to do election interference, to make it so that trolls and other folks can't spread fake news".

Wylie claimed that 270,000 people took the quiz, but the data of some 50 million users, mainly in the USA, was harvested without their explicit consent via their friend networks. "What we try to do is send the person at Facebook who will have the most knowledge".

The footage released this week also revealed Mark Turnbull, the managing director Cambridge Analytica's (CA) political division, taking credit for the "Defeat Crooked Hillary" brand of attack adverts.

In a blog post announcing decision, Mozilla's chief business and legal officer Denelle Dixon acknowledged Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's promise to limit developer access to data, but the company still takes issue with Facebook's default privacy settings.

"Last year in 2017 with the special election in Alabama, we deployed some new AI tools to identify fake accounts and false news, and we found a significant number of Macedonian accounts that were trying to spread false news, and were able to eliminate those", Zuckerberg said.

Those will include an investigation of apps that had access to large amounts of information before the rules were changed, more restrictions on developers' data access and a requirement that developers obtain approval and sign a contract in order to ask anyone for access to their posts or other private data.

Zuckerberg has also given a TV interview to CNN, apologising for the "breach of trust" and saying he was "really sorry that this happened".

Under the Israeli Privacy Law, personal data may only be used for the goal for which it was given, with the consent of the individual.

UK Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham first demanded access to Cambridge Analytica's records and data on March 7.

Facebook says it keeps "backup copies for a reasonable period of time" after a deletion, and it says that can be as long as three months.

Cambridge Analytica denied those claims, and said it had deleted the data.

Damian Collins, chair of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, said Zuckerberg had a duty to respond to MPs' queries.
